AN EVER PRESENT HELP

James stood on the balcony of the 11th floor of the Onaton Building. Today was the day. The day he had decided to end it all. He had thought about it for months, 12 months to be precise. The hopelessness. The painful losses. The betrayal. The problems too big for him to handle… It all started with the loss of his job. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he discovered his wife had been having an affair with his best friend. While he was still trying to take all that in, after series of tests, he was painfully informed that his eight-year-old son had a life-threatening brain tumor. He just had to go. There was no point. No point in continuing. No point in living. Those were his last thoughts as he jumped down the 11th floor of the Onaton Building and ended up in a pool of blood, his own blood.

There are some problems that come your way that you can handle. All you need to do is talk to one or two people about it and they can give you the money you need, if it’s a financial problem. But there are some problems that are beyond you. Life is full of problems. Repeated or reoccurring problems. Problems peculiar to a particular age group. Problems that are gender related. Minor problems that you can handle. Major problems you can’t tackle on your own. The Bible in Job 5:7 tells us that “Man is born to trouble as surely as sparks fly upward”. This has nothing to do with how good or bad a person is. Troubles are just part of the fallen world we live in. Jesus didn’t deceive any of His disciples into thinking that if they followed Him they would never come across any problem. Instead, He told them a hard but important truth of life “In this world you will have trouble” (John 16:33). But He didn’t just end with the sad news that they would face problems as they go through life. He went on to say “But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). There is no problem in this world that Jesus can’t help you overcome.

Job lost his house, his business, and his children all in one day, yet he didn’t run mad or commit suicide. Job also battled with a terrible sickness for months, but at the end he came out completely healed and victorious. (Job 1:13-22, Job 2:7-8, Job 42:12-17). Psalm 46:1 tells us that “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble”. Job discovered the sure, steady and unfailing help of God. God’s help never fails. God’s help is what we need to go through life.

God wants to help you through every need and situation. You are never alone. The man in the story above didn’t know this that was why he took his life. He didn’t realize that a problem may be too big for man to handle, but there is no problem that is too big for God to handle. God has sent His Son Jesus to be an ever present help in any situation or problem of life (Hebrews 13:5). It’s dangerous not to have Jesus in your life. To go through life without Jesus is to be in the world without hope. Jesus is a trusted source of hope even in the most hopeless situation. When you don’t have Jesus in your life, the devil will give you many harmful options when problems come your way. He would suggest things like cigarettes, drugs, or alcohol to make you forget the problem. And for a while it may look like these things are working; they are helping you handle the problem, but what they are doing is silently damaging your life. The devil can even encourage you to take your own life rather than face a problem. Jesus on the other hand offers you divine strength and wisdom to face any problem, a shoulder to lean on, and His everlasting hands to carry you victoriously through any situation. You need Jesus to overcome. Do you have Jesus in your life? I don’t mean do you go to church? Do you have a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ? If you have never accepted Jesus into your life, then pray this simple prayer: Lord Jesus, have mercy on me. I believe You are the Son of the living God and that You died on the cross so I may have forgiveness for my sins and eternal life. Please Lord, forgive me for every sin I have ever committed. I realize that without You in my life, I am totally helpless to face the challenges of life. I want to be a victor not a victim. Keep me from falling and failing. Come and help me live a victorious life. Come and fill me and empower me to endure, take heart, and never give up. Come into my heart as my personal Lord and Saviour today. From today, be my Father, Friend, my Peace in the midst of a storm, my Solution Provider, and Ever Present Help in times of need and trouble.
