Delight In the Word

When we look at the life of Jesus Christ, we can’t help but notice the passion and commitment Jesus had for the Word of God. When the devil threw fiery darts of temptation at Jesus, Jesus was able to stand up to everything the devil threw at Him by using the Word. Jesus spoke the Word with power and authority and the devil left Him. Looking unto Jesus, means being transformed into the likeness of Jesus; having a burning desire and hunger for the Word of God like Jesus had. The same Word Jesus used to defeat the devil hands down is the same Word God has given to us. It still holds the same power. When we believe, speak and declare God’s Word, every devil and demon out to bring us down will flee.

Jesus told the devil “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4). While Jesus was here on earth, He lived on the Word of God. We are not just to fill our stomachs with physical food, we need to fill ourselves with spiritual food; the Word of God (Matthew 4:4). The Word of God should be part of our daily diet so that when we have decisions to make, we are guided by the light of the Word (Psalm 119:105). When we come across hopeless, impossible situations, we can release the Word of life that can turn humanly impossible situations around (Luke 18:27).

There is great power in the Word of God. Jesus knew the power in the Word to transform lives and turn situations around. In Matthew 17:20, Jesus taught us that when there is a mountain before us, nothing changes until we speak to that mountain. Mountains can hear the Word of God. So speak to every mountain of delay, opposition, obstruction, sickness, barrenness, poverty and stagnation before you to move.

In Mark 11:12-14, Jesus told a fig tree “may no one ever eat fruit from you again”. The tree heard every word Jesus spoke. By morning the next day, the fig tree had withered from the roots (Mark 11:20). With God’s Word, we can uproot every tree of sin, confusion, shame and reproach, discouragement, strife, disunity, failure, stagnation and barrenness from our lives, family, church and nation.

In John 11, Martha and Mary were faced with a hopeless situation. Their brother Lazarus had been dead for four days. Jesus spoke the Word to a dead man and the Word brought him back to life. The Word turned a hopeless situation around and replaced sadness with gladness. In Mark 4:35-41, Jesus spoke to the turbulent waves and there was peace and calm all around.

The devil knows the power in the Word of God that’s why he works hard to make us doubt God’s Word or stay away from God’s Word. As the year draws to an end, let’s do an honest appraisal. Did we have a hunger and passion for the Word this year? Did we delight in the Word of God; was it something we were excited about and gave our time and energy to? Did we use it in our decision making? Did we respond to situations that came our way with the Word of God? Or did we allow the troubles and difficulties of life overwhelm us? Did we hide the Word in our heart to keep sin and temptation away?

The whole essence of looking unto Jesus is so that we can know Jesus, the Word (John 1:1) and have the living, ancient Words of God dwelling richly in our hearts (Colossians 3:16), so we can  live the victorious life Jesus died to give us.

It’s not too late to get back into believing, delighting, holding on to and speaking the Word of God. As we renew our commitment to the Word of God this last month of the year, the Word will wash us, fill our hearts with peace, free us from all anxieties, make us fruitful, and strengthen and empower us to accomplish those things we haven’t been able to do since the year began.

The Word is real, living and active. It carries great power. God places such a high value on the Word. He has exalted His Word above His name. (Psalm 132:2). We too should treat God’s Word as a great treasure, for it is more precious than thousands of pieces of silver and gold (Psalm 119:72). As we believe the Word, chew it day and night, live by it and run with it, the Word will be our joy and heart’s delight and we will see the manifestation of God’s promises in our lives.
