Skeletons in Our Cupboard

‘And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.’ – Hebrews 4:13

 You can’t keep a secret from God. He will surely discover your secret even without anyone telling Him about it. Hebrews 4:13 tells us that everything about us is seen and known by God. Our lives are an open book before God. Nothing we do is hidden from God. We can’t hide our past, dark secrets, sins or the skeletons in our cupboard from God.

Hiding skeletons in our cupboard dates back to the time of Adam and Eve. When Adam and Eve sinned against God by eating from the tree God had warned them not to eat from, they tried to hide from God. They thought they could keep what they had done a secret. But the God whom no creature, no sin, no skeleton is hidden from, knew exactly where they were and what they had done.

In Psalm 139:7-8, David wrote about the futility of trying to hide skeletons in our cupboard from God. He said ‘Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.’ You can’t hide from God, you can’t run away from God. Whatever you try to cover up, God’s light will uncover.

When Adam and Eve tried to cover up their nakedness with figs leaves, God still saw their nakedness. It is only when we lay bare before God what we have done that He is able to cover our nakedness; our sin, shame and failures with His mercy and glory.

Hiding our sin; hiding skeletons in our cupboard on the other hand:

• Puts unnecessary pressure on us to pretend to be who we are not.
• Keeps us tied to the sins and mistakes of the past.
• Makes us live in continual fear of being found out.
• Makes us spend so much time and energy talking about other people’s faults, hoping that will divert attention away from the ugly skeleton hiding in our own cupboard.
• Makes us tell a bunch of lies to cover-up the skeleton in our cupboard.

God wants us to hold nothing back from Him. He wants us to let it all out; to tell Him what we have done wrong, where we have messed up. God wants us to tell Him about the skeletons in our cupboard.

With this kind of openness and sincerity:

• We find mercy.
• God throws out all the skeletons and gives us room to breathe and think clearly.
• We are given a fresh start.
• Our bad record is wiped away.
• Layers of guilt are removed.
• We receive grace to break free from our past and receive the incredible future God has for us.

Skeletons are ugly, skeletons are spooky and scary. They are the last thing we should have in our cupboard. So, let’s get those skeletons out!
