“And the scripture was fulfilled which says, ‘Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.’ And he was called the friend of God.” – James 2:23
What’s more important than our relationship with God? Is it a comfortable life, record-breaking success in career and business, an unending flow of financial blessings, good health, good family relationships, and good friends? These are all great things to desire and have, but they all pale into insignificance compared to the joy of knowing God and being acknowledged by God as one of His friends.
It’s one thing to say that someone is your good friend; it’s another for the person to actually agree and affirm that you are a close friend. In Isaiah 41:8, God referred to Abraham as His friend. Abraham is also called a friend of God in James 2:23.
If God were to describe your relationship with Him, which of these types of friends would God call you?
An Acquaintance: There’s nothing special between you and God. You talk to Him every now and then; you know a little bit about Him from what you’ve heard in church, from people close to you, or on the internet, but between you and Him, there’s no real attachment or connection.
A Fair-Weather Friend: The only time God gets to see you or hear from you is when circumstances are pleasant and convenient for you or when you need Him to give you something or do something for you.
A Close Friend: There’s a strong bond between you and God. You talk to Him more than you do with anyone else. He is your Number 1 Confidant. He knows all your fears, pains, struggles, heartbreaks, and pains. He is the One person you’re not ready to part with or do away with. Your relationship with Him may not be perfect, but your relationship with Him is everything to you—everything you need.
PRAYER
Father, please take my love for You and my relationship with You to a higher, stronger and deeper level. Let me be known and counted as one of the friends of God.
