There’s no new formula or tactic from the devil and the kingdom of darkness. Temptation is still the major way the devil operates to get people to go against God and rob them of their blessings. He tempted Adam, the first man God created. He tempted Jesus, the Man God sent to redeem and repair the damage that the sin of Adam caused mankind. He tempted so many other Bible characters. And he is still busy at this old game, moving like a roaring lion from place to place, from generation to generation, looking for whom to lead astray and into his trap to devour and destroy (1 Peter 5:8).
Temptation remains his pattern. All he does is repackage it to fit each generation and exploit each generation’s weakness. He studies what’s driving each generation and tailors his temptation accordingly.
Every generation has its strengths and weaknesses, as well as unique pressures. For instance, children born between 2013 and 2025 exhibit some common characteristics. If you have a child born during this period, you may notice that they have a strong understanding of AI. AI isn’t just a tool to them. It’s their normal; it’s the world they were born into. They can pick up a phone and navigate it faster than adults, often without needing a manual or training. They are drawn to digital games. They are the ask AI, not Google it, generation. While this proficiency with technological gadgets is a positive trait, it is accompanied by challenges such as impatience, overdependence on AI, screen addiction, boredom, and difficulty maintaining focus. My son belongs to this generation, commonly referred to as Generation Alpha, so I witness these behaviors firsthand.
For my mother’s generation, traits like discipline, loyalty, resilience, and sacrifice were highly valued. Many parents from this era faced immense pressure to “tough it out” and provide for their families at all costs. For them, respect often meant never questioning authority: “I said so. Don’t ask questions. Just obey.”
Now, imagine these parents interacting with Millennials, Gen Z, and especially Gen Alpha, who question everything and prefer to obey only after you give a clear and logical reason why they should.
Oversharing without boundaries is common among younger generations, while older generations often adopt a mindset of toughing it out, avoiding complaints, and concealing their weaknesses and vulnerabilities. This approach has led many to bottle up their emotions. Their “carry your cross and move on” attitude results in suffering in silence. Self-righteousness is one way the enemy tempts them; they tend to judge others while hiding their own personal struggles. Moreover, concerns about health, finances, and their children’s future can lead to fear and anxiety, making them susceptible to greed and the hoarding of money.
For the younger generation, who seem to spend all their time in front of screens, the devil presents various forms of addictive content on social media to draw them into sin. He employs influencers who are not influenced and guided by the Spirit of God to consistently expose them to material that distances them from God or leads them to doubt the foundational truths of His Word.
Just as the devil’s tactics haven’t changed, the defense and path to victory haven’t changed. It’s still prayer, the Word, and obedience. James 4:7 is still as powerful today as it was when Jesus was here on earth: “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Matthew 26:41: “Watch and pray so you don’t fall into temptation.”
No matter what generation we belong to, we have the power in Christ Jesus to resist and say no to temptation. Titus 2:11-12 states, “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age.” Through prayer, we receive the grace and strength needed to resist temptation and deny the present-day, well-packaged snares and enticements of the devil.
If we want to walk in victory, we must say NO to temptation and YES to a lifestyle of prayer. The flesh is weak and easily succumbs to temptation, but prayer strengthens our spirit. It diminishes and weakens the desires of the flesh and its control over us. Prayer creates a protective barrier around us to help keep temptation away. On the other hand, prayerlessness leaves us defenseless, unguarded, and exposed (Proverbs 25:28). When we fail to engage in daily, fervent, and consistent prayer, any temptation can find a comfortable place to settle in our hearts and lives.
Stop looking for a new formula to fit the times we live in; just do what Jesus instructed: watch and pray. Watch to know your generation’s weak spots and the schemes of Satan for your own generation, watch to know your own personal weaknesses and how Satan can set up a bait for you in that area, watch to know who is masquerading as an angel of light but is an agent of darkness that has been sent to destroy, divide and cause havoc, then use prayer to scatter and dismantle satanic structures; the tricks, tactics and temptation of the devil.
Prayer is not ordinary; it is not just a ritual we perform or a badge we wear to identify us as Christians. Prayer is our lifeline, our weapon of warfare. This is why we must pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people” (Ephesians 6:18).
No matter how long or hard any generation prays, we cannot put an end to temptation. Temptations will always exist, seeking ways to enter our hearts and lives. Prayer serves as an alarm system and floodlight; it alerts us when a temptation is approaching and helps us to barricade and secure the door of our hearts so that we don’t give in to it. Don’t go through life defenseless; watch and pray!
