‘For by you I can run against a troop, by my God I can leap over a wall’, – 2 Samuel 22:30
An obstacle is anything that keeps us from moving forward in life. Obstacles hinder our progress. There are two types of obstacles:
1. Obstacles IN US. Hebrews 12:1 tells us to throw off, to lay aside weights and sins that entangle us and hinder us from running. Our fears, bad attitudes, faulty thinking, weaknesses and sins we easily fall for are obstacles; they are extra and unwanted fat we need to throw away, we need to get rid of. We need to overcome these internal obstacles so we can run to the place God has prepared for us, so we can reach those heights God wants to take us to, and lay hold of all the blessings that have our personal names on them.
2. Obstacles BEFORE US. These are barriers, walls and mountains before us, rough roads that are difficult to pass through or a dead end or blocked way (Isaiah 45:2, Isaiah 40:2). These are opposition from enemies or those that don’t want to see us progress in life, unfavourable and ungodly laws and policies, problems in our families we were born into, situations we find ourselves in that can’t be linked to anything we have done or failed to do, global problems like a pandemic. These external obstacles can be overwhelming, but they are not unconquerable.
In 2 Samuel 22:30, David, the man who had to deal with obstacles in him and before him, revealed the secret behind his overcoming obstacles in life. He said “By my God, I can leap over a wall’. David said ‘By my God’ not by my intelligence, strength, money, position, or connections. It is by God, with God and through God that we can overcome the present obstacles before us. As we make God our God, put our trust in Him, and daily call out to Him, the God that helped David to scale over all manner of walls and obstructions will help us to overcome every obstacle before us. God will take the stumbling block and barrier out of our way in Jesus mighty name. Amen. By God’s help and power, we will overcome this pandemic. By our God, we will overcome anything in us or before us that is preventing us from moving forward.
O Lord, my God, release fresh strength on me and carry me on eagles wings high above every obstacle before me.
